• Higher ground, clearer views. Downtown Fredericksburg sits around ~1,690–1,730 ft above sea level; the surrounding uplands in Gillespie County rise toward ~1,900–2,250 ft. That extra elevation—plus thinner haze—helps stars punch through.

• Less skyglow than in-town stays. Fredericksburg’s dark-sky commitment reduces light pollution overall, but proximity still matters: being farther from the brightest commercial corridors means darker horizons and better contrast.

• Right in a known night-sky corridor. Old Tunnel State Park—minutes from us—literally suggests lingering after sunset to “enjoy the night sky,” a great hint at local conditions.
